FAQ
What people ask before they book.
These are the questions Doug gets on the phone every week. If yours isn't here, call him — he answers fast.
Do I need a fishing license?
No. The captain's USCG charter license covers everyone on the boat. You do not need an individual NC saltwater fishing license when fishing under a licensed charter.
Is this trip kid-friendly?
Yes. Captain Doug regularly takes families with kids as young as 8. He's known for being calm and patient with first-time anglers. Granddaughters, sons, daughters — bring them.
How many people can come?
Up to five anglers per trip. Pricing is the same for 1 to 4 anglers. There's a $50 (full day) or $25 (half day) add-on for a fifth person.
What do I need to bring?
Sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a non-glass cooler for any fish you keep, and lunch or snacks for a full-day trip. All rods, reels, tackle, and bait are provided.
Does Doug clean the fish?
Yes. Doug cleans and bags any keeper fish at the dock at no additional charge. A previous customer noted he even froze the catch when the cooler couldn't fit it all.
What if the weather is bad?
Captain's call. If the wind, lightning, or sea state is unsafe, we reschedule at no cost. Light rain or chop usually doesn't cancel a trip — the fish bite well in marginal weather. If you have to cancel for your own reason, call as early as possible.
When is the best time to fish Hatteras inshore?
It depends on what you want to catch. Red drum and speckled trout are strong April–May and September–November. Cobia run through May and June. Spanish mackerel and flounder peak in summer. See the seasons calendar for a month-by-month breakdown.
How early do we leave?
Full days start at sunrise — usually around 6:00 AM in summer, later in winter. Half days start at 6:30 AM or 12:00 PM. We'll confirm the time when you book.
Where do we meet?
At the Hallelujah dock at Teach's Lair Marina, 58646 NC-12, Hatteras NC 27943. Doug will give you the slip number when you book.
Will I catch a fish?
Doug has put nearly every customer on fish for 27 years. There are no guarantees in fishing, but the reviews speak for themselves — 5.0 stars on TripAdvisor with one repeat customer noting they can only remember one slow day in years of trips.
