Inshore Hatteras · Pamlico Sound
Flounder
Paralichthys dentatus / lethostigma · also called Fluke (summer), Southern Flounder
Structure fish. Best in summer when the heat pushes them to drop-offs and pilings.
Flounder ambush from the bottom, so we work them along structure. Pilings, channel edges, drop-offs in the sound. A bucktail bounced slow with a soft plastic trailer is the workhorse rig. Live mullet drifted on a Carolina rig is the next move.
Summer is prime. The fish stack on the structure when the sound water warms up, and a half-day trip can put four or five keepers in the cooler.
Regulations are tight. Check the NC Marine Fisheries seasons before the trip; we'll release everything that doesn't measure.
